Vinea is built by a single home winemaker for other home winemakers. We've kept the data story as small as we can manage, and this page tells you exactly what we collect, where it goes, and how to get rid of it.
The short version
- Your cellar data lives in your iCloud, not on our servers. We can't see it.
- If you ask the Pro AI assistant a question about a batch, that batch's data is sent to our processor for analysis and discarded after the response comes back.
- If you join the waitlist on this site, we keep your email address until we email you the launch link. Then you can ask us to delete it.
- We don't use ad networks, third-party analytics, or trackers. There's nothing to opt out of, because there's nothing tracking you.
Who we are
"Vinea" refers to the iOS app and the website at vineacellar.com (collectively, "we," "us"). For any privacy question, write to privacy@vineacellar.com — that's the canonical contact path and we read every message.
What data we collect, and why
1. Cellar and vineyard data you enter in the app
Everything you type into the app — batches, readings, additions, stage notes, photos, and (if you enable it) vineyard records — is stored on your device and synced to your private iCloud through Apple. We do not run a backend that stores or reads this data, and we have no way to access it. If you close your iCloud account or delete the app and clear its iCloud data, the records are gone.
2. Subscription verification
When you subscribe to Vinea Pro and use a Pro feature, your device sends us proof of your subscription so we can confirm you're entitled to it. That proof is verified against Apple's records. We receive an anonymous subscription identifier issued by Apple, the product purchased, and the expiration date — nothing else. Apple does not share your name, email, payment information, or Apple ID with developers, and we don't ask for them.
We use the anonymous identifier to count how many AI analyses you've used in the current month so we can enforce the seasonal-cap policy described on the paywall. The counter resets each month.
3. AI analysis requests
When you tap "Ask Vinea" on a batch, we send that batch's data to an AI processor and return its response to your device. We do not store the request, the response, or the conversation history — they pass through and are discarded after the call completes.
We never send your name, email, photos, or the names you've given your batches — only the structured numbers and notes the model needs for the analysis (variety, vintage, stage, recent readings, additions). You can find more detail about how the AI processor handles data in the Anthropic Privacy Policy.
4. Waitlist signup (this website only)
If you submit your email on this site to be notified when Vinea launches, we store:
- Your email address
- The page you signed up from
- Standard request metadata (IP address, user agent, referrer, approximate country) — used to deter spam and abuse
- The timestamp of the signup
We use this only to email you the launch link, and to enforce a per-IP rate limit on signups. We do not use it for marketing, drip sequences, or any other purpose. After we email you the launch link, you can ask us to delete the record.
5. App Store Analytics
Apple provides aggregate, anonymized analytics to developers — download counts, crash counts, retention curves — but only if you've enabled "Share With App Developers" in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements. We see counts, never identities. You can disable this any time.
Who we share data with
Vinea uses three external service providers to operate the app and website:
- Apple — handles the App Store, your iCloud sync, and subscription billing. Required for the app to function. Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Cloudflare — hosts this website and our backend services. Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
- Anthropic — processes Pro AI requests on our behalf. Anthropic Privacy Policy.
We don't sell or share data with anyone else. We don't use ad networks, third-party analytics, attribution tools, or similar trackers.
How long we keep data
| What | Retention |
|---|---|
| Your cellar / vineyard records | Until you delete them or close iCloud |
| AI request and response data | Discarded immediately after the request |
| Subscription verification token | Discarded immediately after the request |
| Anonymous monthly AI usage counter | Resets each calendar month |
| Waitlist email + metadata | Until the launch email or your deletion request |
| Spam-prevention rate-limit counter | Auto-expires within an hour |
Your rights
- Access and export. The app's Settings tab includes "Export as JSON" and "Export as CSV," which produce a complete dump of every batch, reading, and addition. Use these any time, no questions asked.
- Delete. Delete batches in the app, or delete the entire app and clear its iCloud data via Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Storage → Vinea. To delete a waitlist signup, email privacy@vineacellar.com.
- Stop AI processing. Don't tap "Ask Vinea." There's no AI processing without an explicit request. You can also cancel your Pro subscription via the App Store, which terminates your AI access entirely.
- Withdraw consent. Disable "Share With App Developers" in iOS Settings to stop App Store Analytics; uninstall the app to stop everything else.
Children
Vinea is intended for adults of legal drinking age in their jurisdiction. We do not direct the app at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
All traffic between the app, our backend, and our processors travels over encrypted connections. We don't store payment information or passwords; we don't operate any login system. Subscription proofs are cryptographically verified with Apple on every request. iCloud data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple.
International transfers
Vinea is operated from the United States. Cloudflare and Anthropic operate globally. If you use Vinea from outside the United States, your data may be processed in the U.S. or other countries where these providers operate.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes — adding a new data type we collect, switching processors, or anything similar — we'll update this page and update the "Last updated" date at the top. For significant changes, we'll surface a notice in the app the next time you launch it.
